Job Hunting Tips and Tricks
"Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant." - Robert Louis Stevenson
Finding a job is like a game of Bingo. "I've got a B15 here... Anybody got a B15? Nope - that's B16. B15 anyone?" For a potential employer, it's about matching specific needs with the available candidate who is the closest match. The best strategy any career seeker can have as they search for jobs is -- wear camo. A career seeker should be prepared to adapt his or her resume, interview, personality, work style, interests, needs and skill set to fit in to the surroundings -- to make it clear that they can meet the needs of the hiring company more than anyone else. Honestly, that is... No one should sell what they can't deliver - just cast what they do have in the best light.
Many variables create an open job with an employer. Clearly the company has work that needs to be done and no one to do it... but from there it gets messy. The hiring department may not have the budget to pay a fair wage but still needs to get the work done. The manager is likely concerned that the department's workload will pile up while they search for someone to fill the role and train that person to do the job. The company may be required to advertise the position in the local paper, even though the manager already has someone in mind who is currently in their employ. There may be a miscommunication between the manager who has the need, that manager's boss, the human resources department, the hiring manager, and the accounting department and it turns out that the position isn't properly described. Or something may change midstream from the higher ups, and the position may evaporate as quickly as it was created. The point is, don't take a "no" personally. Say a grateful "thank you" that they didn't waste your time or take you on a wild goose chase, and move on.
In this section of the Career Planning Guide, there are articles with additional job hunting tips and strategies for landing the right job. Career seekers will find that some strategies suit them better than others -- just like job opportunities.
