McGill University

Founded by James McGill in 1821, McGill University, formerly known at the University of McGill College till 1885, is located in Montreal, Canada, and is the country’s oldest public university. The main campus is spread across 80 acres of land in downtown Montreal. The university has another campus called the Macdonald Campus on Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue and this campus sits on 1,600 acres of land. McGill University's recent enrollments have been over 34,000 students every year.

Students of McGill University are members of fraternities and sororities like Alpha Epsilon Pi, Delta Upsilon, Sigma Alpha Mu, Zeta Psi, Gamma Phi Beta, and Alpha Omicron Pi. There are several other student organizations and clubs including the Queer McGill, International Relations Students Association of McGill, and Students' Society of McGill University. The athletics department fields teams in basketball, volleyball, tennis, squash, track and field, fencing, swimming, and racquetball. The men’s teams are known as the McGill Redmen, while the women’s teams are called the McGill Martlets.

The Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings 2008 placed McGill University at the 1st position among all the universities in Canada. The Maclean's 18th annual University Rankings issue also placed the university at the 1st position among all the Canadian universities for four consecutive years.
