The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology – Lausanne, or the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, referred to as the EPFL, was established in 1853. It is located in Lausanne, Switzerland. The EPFL started as a private school which was known as the École Spéciale de Lausanne. In 1890, the institute acquired the status of a university. It was renamed the École Polytechnique de l'Université de Lausanne, or EPUL, in 1946. The EPUL separated from the University of Lausanne in 1969, and became a federal institution. It got its current name the same year.
EPFL's recent enrollments have been more than 5,000 undergraduates and over 1,000 postgraduate students. The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs of study through the following academic divisions:
- Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering

- Computer and Communication Sciences
- Engineering Sciences and Techniques
- Life Sciences
- Management of Technology
- Sociology and humanities
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology – Lausanne has a number of alumni associations including the IML Alumni Association, A3- EPFL, MoT Alumni Association, ADELE, and AEI. Among the alumni of the university are eminent personalities such as Martin Vetterli, professor of information and communication sciences; and André Gorz, economist and philosopher.
