The University of Ottawa, abbreviated as uOttawa was established in 1848, is located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The university is known as Universite d'Ottawa in French. The university started as College of Bytown. This was an institution for boys only. The college became College of Ottawa in 1861. The Royal charter was granted in 1866, and it finally became University of Ottawa. Women were allowed to attend classes from 1919. uOttawa's enrollments have been more than 30,000 undergraduate and 4,000 postgraduate students. The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs of study through the following academic divisions:
The sports teams of the university are known as the Gee-Gees. The teams participate in swimming, basketball, volleyball, hockey, cross country, rugby, and soccer. The students are also associated with clubs and organizations such as SFUO, GSAED, DECA uOttawa, SEDFUO, Botswana Student Association, The FID Film Society, Fashion Student Association, and Omega Theta Alpha Fraternity.
