Founded in 1970, Akron Institute is part of the Herzing Educational System. The institute offers degrees and diplomas in business administration, information technology and healthcare. The school's objective is to provide students the knowledge and skills which are in demand in the workplace. The curriculums are designed to meet industry certification standards.

Akron Institute Academic Programs

  • Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration - The program's objective is to provide the required skills and knowledge for entry-level jobs in a variety of business areas such as accounting, business administration, human resources, sales and marketing.
  • Associate of Applied Science in Computer Networking and Security Technology - Students are prepared for entry-level positions in the computer network technology industry, including network administration, network security and network installation and support.
  • Associate of Applied Science in Dental Assisting - The objective of the program is to properly train students for entry-level jobs as a dental assistant.
  • Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting - Students are introduced to the basic operations of a doctor's office. Students are trained to assist physicians in the examination room, work with financial records, perform laboratory procedures and other tasks.
  • Associate of Applied Science in Medical Billing & Insurance Coding - The objective of the program is to offer students a comprehensive understanding of medical records and thorough training in anatomy, disease processes, physiology and medical terminology.
  • Associate of Applied Science in Nursing - The degree program has been approved by the Ohio State Board of Nursing to prepare students for the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses.
  • Diploma in Dental Assisting - Students learn to perform various tasks allocated to dental assistants.
  • Diploma in Medical Assisting - Upon completion of the program, students have the opportunity to take the certification examination provided by the American Association of Medical Assistants.
  • Diploma in Medical Billing & Insurance Coding - Students are trained to work with healthcare claims including Medicare, Worker's compensation, Medicaid and Blue Cross. Training is provided for other important tasks.

Student Life

Typically, the school has approximately 80% full-time students and almost all of them are in-state residents. School personnel assist students with job searches. Akron Institute is regarded as a commuter school.

Admissions and Financial Aid

A high school diploma or a GED credential is necessary for enrollment. The Financial Aid Office provides financial aid programs to eligible students. About 90% of the students receive financial aid.

Depending on the program, lab tests, physical examinations and/or vaccinations are necessary to be enrolled at the institute. Students are required to take a tour of the campus before they enroll and must be interviewed by an admissions advisor. A pre-entrance test must be taken to participate in the Microsoft Certified Administrator program.
