Studying I Am Currently Pursuing My Bachelors In Justice Studies. (completion in: 2012)

8/27/2011

"I am satisfied with the classes for the most part. I would like to see the price come down a bit."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeI am still undecided about whether or not I would recommend the school. I am satisfied with some aspects but with not others.
School Reputation9I have never heard anything bad from an employer. I have received good comments from anyone I discuss this with.
Satisfaction With Major7I am satisfied with the classes offered for the program, but I would like to see more options on the types of Justice Degrees.
Instruction8The instruction is very good. I am happy with the speed in which I receive responses from the instructor.
Cost2When I started at the school the price was very reasonable. As the cost continues to increase the value for the price is not what one may expect.
Schedule Flexibility10Since I attend online I do not have a problem with the flexibility of the classes. I would like to see certain required justice classes offered more often.
Academic Facilities10Although typical college facilities do not apply to an online student like myself, the ones that do are very well put together. Many facilities, like the library, are very helpful.
Social Life1Social experiences are not really available for online students.
Placement Services5This is hard for me to judge because I have yet to need it. I can say that there is an option to upload my resume and create a profile.
Alumni Network2I am not sure how the alumni network is on campus, however it is virtually non-existent for online students.

Studying Master's In Curriculum And Instruction In Reading (completion in: 2011)

9/3/2011

"Even though an online degree was much more convenient for me and my family, I would have much rather attended an actual campus somewhere. I do feel like the material I studied was beneficial to me."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesIf another teacher wanted to pursue a masters and had a family, I would recommend Grand Canyon University to them. The work is challenging and you learn a great deal.
School Reputation5I put average because I have never had experience trying out my degree with a potential employer yet.
Satisfaction With Major8I felt the courses that were required were engaging and supplied me with information that helped me increase my knowledge of teaching reading. I felt like there were a lot of writing components, but then again, it was graduate work.
Instruction8I felt the curriculum was right where it should have been. The material was thought provoking and the texts supplemented what we were learning.
Cost3I think any course work you take at the university level is expensive. I am not going to enjoy paying off some of these student loans. On a side note, there were many e-Books available for my courses.
Schedule Flexibility10All the online courses were flexible. You are able to pick times to work on the course work as long as you submit it by the given day. It also helped that assignments were due three hours behind my time zone.
Academic Facilities5I put average because I was an online student. The actual website does provide a virtual library and other ways of helping you with your course work.
Social Life2There are not many opportunities to work one on one with other classmates. When we did work in collaborative groups, we interacted with each other through email.
Placement Services1I rated this poorly because again, I am an online student and I don't live in the state of the actual university. It would have been nice to have some help or assistance with job placement, considering I am still unemployed.
Alumni Network2I give this a low rating because as an online student, I have not received any contact about alumni. I also have not received any support with my future endeavors.

Studying Master's Of Education, Special Education, Cross-Categorical (completion in: 2011)

8/27/2011

"I like the program. I have learned a lot and the flexibility of the online program has been very nice."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeBefore they raised the cost, I would have definitely recommended them. Now I am not so sure.
School Reputation5Because I am not in Arizona, most employers are not familiar with the school. Therefore, they have neither a good nor a bad reputation.
Satisfaction With Major9They are well-staffed and respond quickly to any issues or questions. They have a good program with many discussion opportunities.
Instruction7Some of the teachers have a lot of experience and share it with the students. I made many contacts and learned real-life knowledge. Some were not as good, but the majority were well-qualified.
Cost3The program is good but they recently increased the costs and raised fees. Now it is not as good.
Schedule Flexibility10Because it is an online program, the classes are preselected and available almost every week.
Academic Facilities9The library is excellent. The programming is very useful for the online computer courses. They also provide tutoring online and tech support.
Social Life6Because I am in the online program, I do not experience the school spirit, although I hear it is good in Arizona. We do not have any social events.
Placement Services7They are following up with testing information to be sure that I will qualify when I finish. They are helping me get the certification I need.
Alumni Network5My prior teachers have been easy to get ahold of, but I am due to finish this year so I do not have long-term experience.

Grand Canyon University • Online
Studying Business Administration (completion in: 2010)

8/30/2011

"I am satisfied that I have a degree. I am not satisfied with the quality of the degree that I have."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noI probably would not recommend this university to others. I would highly recommend going to another established university if you possibly can.
School Reputation3A lot of employers do not recognize this school. They say that the curriculum is too easy for students and it is not challenging in the way a state university is.
Satisfaction With Major6It has been very difficult to get a steady job out of college. I believe most of that has to do with the economy, but some with my college background.
Instruction6It was relatively difficult following the lesson plans they set for us. They were confusing and it was hard to understand what we needed to do.
Cost5It seemed about average compared to other online universities. I would most likely attend an actual university if given the chance again.
Schedule Flexibility7Flexibility is usually good since it is an online course of study. Some assignments, though, are due in very short periods of time.
Academic Facilities4Since it was an online university, it was very difficult to find resources. I usually had to go to the public library or a state university library for this.
Social Life3I never heard of any social events or parties that took place. This is mainly because it is online, however.
Placement Services5I have had a very difficult time finding a steady career after school. Grand Canyon University is not recognized as an actual university by many employers.
Alumni Network3After graduating I have not heard anything from Grand Canyon University. I don't believe they have an alumni program.

Studying BA - English (completion in: I didn't complete my degree)

8/27/2011

"Online classes are tough. GCU seems like it does a decent job, though."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeIt would depend on whether someone can take online courses or not. It's also very pricey.
School Reputation5I think GCU suffers from the reputations of other online schools. This school at least has a real campus.
Satisfaction With Major5Some of the classes didn't seem to have much online support. Others were very involved.
Instruction6Some teachers never seemed to post on the boards. Other teachers sent long emails and made multiple postings.
Cost1GCU is very expensive. I think most online schools offer about the same in terms of tuition.
Schedule Flexibility9Online students can attend any time. You are required to log on at least a few times each week.
Academic Facilities5I wasn't on campus, so I don't know about libraries, etc. There wasn't much available for online students.
Social Life5This doesn't really apply much to me. The blogs in the online classroom were nice, though.
Placement Services5I never used this service, but I'm sure it's fine.
Alumni Network4Once they took my money, I didn't get much support. The online program requires almost total self-sufficiency.

Grand Canyon University • Online
Studying Education Administration (completion in: 2009)

8/27/2011

"I was very satisfied, but it was very expensive. I enjoyed all of my classes and I learned a lot. The graduation ceremony was outstanding and I am glad to be a Grand Canyon alum."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI have recommended the program to several co-workers and family members and they are now enjoying Grand Canyon. It is great for anyone working or busy with family.
School Reputation10The reputation is great and I love the Christianity that is expressed even through a phone call. At the end of each phone call the representative would always say, “Have a blessed day.” That would give me a wonderful feeling.
Satisfaction With Major10The staff was very helpful when needed and the courses were self explanatory. I really like the fact that it is a Christian school.
Instruction9It was very simple and being able to talk to peers about different real world experiences was enjoyable. The material that we covered was relevant and the assignments were very detailed.
Cost5It cost more because it was online. The experience was great, but it was more expensive than a regular university.
Schedule Flexibility10Advisors automatically enrolled students in the next class necessary, which made class scheduling easy. Everything was online so I was able to work on assignments when I could. The only time I had to call was if I wanted to take more than 1 class per 8 week period.
Academic Facilities8My academic advisor was wonderful and very helpful. I only had to call my professor once and she was very understanding.
Social Life5Everything was done online so I did not get a chance to meet anyone or build a social relationship with anyone. I met a few people at graduation, and graduation itself was much more than I expected.
Placement Services3I have been trying to become an online instructor ever since the day I graduated and no on has contacted me yet. I called to make sure I filled out the correct form online and no one was able to tell me anything.
Alumni Network8Alumni are able to get a scholarships easily if they choose to return to further their education. I do not like like it is hard to begin a career at Grand Canyon. I feel alumni should be the first priority if a position is available.

Grand Canyon University • Online
Studying Accounting (completion in: 2012)

9/7/2011

"I would attend the school again just to finish my degree, but if I have another option I will take it. The school was not all together when it came to advising students. Connecting with your advisor was hard to do."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noIt may be a very good school to attend in person, but doing it online is not the way to go. They need to be on the same page as far as the advisors go.
School Reputation5Not many people I came across know about the school. It was hard to tell people that I did not actually attend the school physically, but instead I was an online student.
Satisfaction With Major4It was very hard to connect with the professors. I was told they would respond to you within 24 hours but it took some professors 3 days or 4 days to get back to you; by then your assignments were due. Also, they seemed not to care about your technical issues with the school's website or the other websites that they were using.
Instruction5The professors did not teach anything. We had to do our own research to find out what the professors wanted from us.
Cost1I paid what I paid when I attended a traditional campus, plus a little extra.
Schedule Flexibility2The advisors picked the classes for you. If you had to drop one, you had to go through your advisor and you likely did not get any response from them until the class was over with and your grades were really poor.
Academic Facilities1It was hard to log in to any of these services from the school's website, and when I called to talk to someone they blamed it on the internet connection on my end.
Social Life5As far as I know they had what every other college had, but I attended online so I am not positive about this.
Placement Services1I asked my advisor about finding internships and was told he could only help me if I was in the state. I found that a little disconcerting since I was attending online school and picked that school because I was told by my first advisor that they helped whether you were in state or out of state.
Alumni Network1There was no way to contact past students or even current students other than through the online comments board.

9/6/2011

"I would recommend this school to others. This is a Christian based school, which is something to keep in mind."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesIt is a very pleasant school.
School Reputation6Very good. Some places have not heard of Grand Canyon University, though.
Satisfaction With Major10Grand Canyon University's programs are set up for the working professional. Programs are designed for older working adults.
Instruction6Some of the professors are there just for a pay check. There are few professors that are there to teach.
Cost6It's very reasonable and it's cheaper than DeVry.
Schedule Flexibility6Very good class schedule. As long as you do not go two or more days without logging in, you are good.
Academic Facilities8Everything is online and easy to access. Tutors are available anytime.
Social Life6I attend online. I get newsletters every month.
Placement Services5I have not had to deal with this yet. Most of the people that attend already had jobs and they are just getting more training to advance their careers.
Alumni Network6Academic advisors care about you. They have called me when we were having bad weather to check to make sure my family was ok.

Grand Canyon University • Phoenix, AZ
Studying Nursing, BS (completion in: I didn't my degree)

9/21/2011

"I'm satisfied with the overall experience I had at Grand Canyon U. I'm a little upset that I wasn't able to finish because I do have a lot of student loan debt. I would warn anyone thinking about applying to this school to think carefully about their finances. The tuition is almost as expensive as medical school."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?maybeThe tuition costs are a problem. They accept most applicants as long as your GPA and recommendations are decent. But you'll end up with a huge loan debt after you finish.
School Reputation7Grand Canyon U is a for-profit school and most hospital hiring staff kind of look down on it. I guess the one good thing going for any student graduating with a BS in nursing is that there is a nursing shortage. The bad news is that this doesn't mean they are just handing jobs away to anyone. The nursing job market is fierce.
Satisfaction With Major7The teachers were courteous and friendly, but they seemed a little under-qualified. They couldn't fully answer students' questions that required more application.
Instruction7This was an expensive program and I expected the instruction to be competent. Some classes had stellar instructors who inspired and challenged me. Others were just a waste of time. I felt like I knew more than the instructors did for some classes.
Cost7The classes were not ivy-league quality, but they were constructive. The instructors accommodated your needs to the best of their abilities and the academic environment was non-hostile. I wasn't able to complete the program due to financial reasons.
Schedule Flexibility8The schedules were pretty flexible. Appointments I set with instructors were always kept. In reference to class times, the accelerated program does not offer much flexibility because certain classes must be taken in specific semesters to qualify for later classes. If you missed one, you'd have to wait a whole year to take it again.
Academic Facilities7The facilities and resources were pretty decent. The library was well-stocked and the reference librarian assisted you in ordering any article you needed. The computer labs were well-maintained; I never had trouble getting access to a computer.
Social Life8Grand Canyon is a religious institution, so pretty much everyone was friendly. I had no problem growing social connections. There was very little rivalry and competition. Students worked together to help each other out.
Placement Services7The counselors are very friendly and the last semester of the program was supposed to prepare you for job interviews and help you start the application process. Since I left the program before completion, I didn't experience the career services assistance. But, I do remember the other students talking highly of it.
Alumni Network6I did not take advantage of the alumni network to reap its benefits. I don't remember the instructors or students ever talking about the alumni. None of the instructors were alumni.

Studying B.A. In Accounting/Business/CPA (completion in: 2008)

9/24/2011

"G.C.U. provided me with excellent resources, a supportive staff and student body, and they gave me an accredited degree in the same amount of time a regular university would have. The main difference I see is that my education here was less costly."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThe degree I was awarded from this school holds the same accreditation as a degree from a state university would. Employers do not look down on you for going to an online school. This school is reasonably priced and has provided me with a solid foundation to build my career upon.
School Reputation9My advisers and all but a couple of professors I had were helpful and seemed to know what they were doing. I had a few bad experiences in two of my classes that I attribute to the negligence of the professors teaching those classes.
Satisfaction With Major10The school has an excellent and wide variety of online resources available to students. This school also has a great supporting staff who are willing to help you on a very personal level to achieve your goals.
Instruction9Normal courses were condensed into 8 week courses which made learning an intensive process. But the teachers were very helpful and went beyond what I expected of an online school. I had teachers that were willing to help me live through webcam chat if I had a problem that I needed help with.
Cost9I would say that the education given is comparable to other more expensive state universities. I think that overall, going to G.C.U. is a cheaper alternative than going to an accredited state university.
Schedule Flexibility9The school provided me with a capable adviser who was able to help me create a flexible schedule that allowed me to work throughout the time I attended. Having online classes made the creation of my schedule relatively easy.
Academic Facilities9The school's online resources are, in my opinion, just as sufficient as any state university. An online library was available to me as was an extensive network of information to help me with my studies and navigation of the school's online classroom. The professors were often prompt in their responses to my online queries, usually through email and sometimes through live chat/webcam chat. Classes were generally kept between 15-20 people but space wasn't an issue seeing as everything was carried out online. I was able to keep in touch with my classmates via email and through a forum which proved quite useful at times when professors weren't available or when I needed a different perspective.
Social Life2I am aware that the school had a basketball team and probably hosted social events, but I never attended anything extracurricular or otherwise because I lived a long way away from the actual ground campus.
Placement Services7G.C.U. did everything they could to help me secure an intern position before graduation, but I was unable to secure a solid position until a few months after graduation.
Alumni Network3I had the ability to interact with other classmates, but there were no formal online groups that I could build connections with for my career after graduation. I have heard of students landing jobs with the help of other classmates but never experienced this myself.

Studying Bachelors Of Education With Focus On Biology And Literature (completion in: 2013)

9/30/2011

"Thus far, I have been very satisfied with Grand Canyon University. The school has a great online class system. The courses are easy to follow and the instructors provide great feedback."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would recommend this school to others because the online system is very flexible and easy to understand. The online degrees are a great alternative to actually attending classes.
School Reputation5I don't know much about the reputation that Grand Canyon University has in the eyes of employers. I have not heard anything either way.
Satisfaction With Major10I believe all the course material is relevant to the subject matter being studied. Further, the online course system is easy to navigate with plenty of support from University staff.
Instruction10The curriculum is of high quality with all of it being relevant to the subject matter being studied. The course of study and instruction provided through Grand Canyon will help anyone reach their educational goals.
Cost3I think that Grand Canyon University is extremely expensive. However, despite the high costs of Grand Canyon University, it is likely about average compared to other universities.
Schedule Flexibility5I am taking online courses. This allows great flexibility to do my homework when I have time. Further, there is plenty of time allotted to submit homework assignments.
Academic Facilities10I attend Grand Canyon University online. The ease of access to the computer systems is fantastic. It allows me to complete my assignments and remain connected to the university and other students.
Social Life2I attend school online and so I am not socially connected to the school. The online systems do, however, allow some social connectivity to other students through the discussion forums.
Placement Services5I have not seen any of the job placement services through the online systems. However, I imagine there there may be something through Grand Canyon University.
Alumni Network5Online, there is plenty of support to students attending. There is great opportunity to get connected to the school.

10/25/2011

"I had a good experience, however it was not worth what I paid. The faculty was completely cold to the student body, and clearly didn't care whether I passed or failed."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noYou could get the same experience at a community college. Grand Canyon University has a lot of improvements to make before I give that school a good recommendation.
School Reputation4Most employers said it might as well be a community college. I agree with them, as I was completely unprepared.
Satisfaction With Major4I was under challenged and often left to the teachings of the professor's assistant. I felt completely unprepared and blind sided by his exit exam.
Instruction1I felt my professor was only mildly educated in his field. I also felt he was inexperienced in the business world, and he was just reading from the textbook that somebody else wrote.
Cost5With my scholarship, I only had to take out a small loan.
Schedule Flexibility3My classes were at ridiculous hours of the day. I had to wake up extremely early and didn't get home until ten. If I ever missed a single day, I would be behind for a month.
Academic Facilities4We had a decent enough library and computer lab. However, the tutors often had no idea what they were talking about.
Social Life10
Placement Services10I was given a recommendation from my professor. The recommendation allowed me to quickly get a job right after I graduated.

10/24/2011

"Aside from the costs, I was very satisfied with my experience there. I am completely content with the amount of knowledge I was able to gather during my years in attendance."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesI would highly recommend this college to others. Without a doubt I can look back on my years there with pride.
School Reputation8Employers know that graduates from the school are well trained, flexible, and self-motivated. All of these qualities are absolutely necessary to graduate.
Satisfaction With Major9The college was very career oriented. Every class was structured so as to instruct on the real life applications of the skills taught.
Instruction10The instructors were hand picked artists and writers who had long-since established their names in their respective industries. Their instruction methods were refined and practical.
Cost2Basic tuition costs were astronomical. Most students put all they had into tuition and scrapped by elsewhere financially.
Schedule Flexibility5Being a small school with few instructors, flexibility in class scheduling was limited. Some classes, especially the basic ones, were offered multiple times a day, while others were offered only once a week.
Academic Facilities10The school made sure that every student would have resources they need to turn out the highest quality work. Everything an artist could need was provided on campus for free.
Social Life8School spirit was extremely high. Students were proud to wear the school's logo on their t-shirts, hoodies, and backpacks.
Placement Services9The school did a great job of making sure most everyone who graduated had a firm grasp on which direction they need to move in order to be hired. Multiple internship positions were offered to all students.
Alumni Network4Graduates tended to fall off the map. The school did not invest much in having alumni return to campus to speak to undergraduates.

10/25/2011

"Like I said before, the school set me up for a successful life and so far I have been very successful. I am paid enough to live a normal life with my family."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?yesThis school is located in a fantastic place, although it is very warm. There are wonderful students and teachers that will make sure you are taught and set up for life. It is worth the price and should be attended by many students.
School Reputation10The employers were very kind and helpful. The campus is filled with fantastic people who will help you with anything needed.
Satisfaction With Major8My overall rating for my major is an eight because I learned a lot of information I had been wanting to obtain. The class sizes were not what I expected, but the learning environment was great. I was taught well and have been successful so far in my life after college.
Instruction9The instruction provided was extremely good and was easy to obtain. The essentials were taught and have gotten me through life easily so far. I am very satisfied with the teaching.
Cost8I come from a wealthy family so the cost wasn't too bad for me. The amount for my specific major was about 25,000-30,000 dollars. I think it is a decent price for the program and information you learn.
Schedule Flexibility10The classes are set up for your own personal schedule. When you can not make a class, it is very easy to obtain anything missed.
Academic Facilities10The classrooms were big and the library had almost any book needed. The media centers were also available whenever you needed them, which was very helpful. The class sizes were neither too big nor too small.
Social Life9You can make a lot of friendships at this school and the events that are held are great. It is a great place to meet new people. In fact, I met my wife at this school.
Placement Services8This school hands down will set you up for success and place you in a great, friendly place. It was extremely helpful and took a lot of stress off of me.
Alumni Network6The support was there, but was not emphasized enough for my liking. Although I give a six, the alumni support was there and helped a lot.

Would Recommend?maybeDid not spend a whole lot of time on campus, so it is hard to vouch for the school. Classes are well taught. It all depends on the person.
School Reputation5The school is not extremely well known. It does help that it is a private school, though.
Satisfaction With Major6The professors were very well educated. Online class system was a little on the weak side.
Instruction8Teachers were very well educated. All of mine were very knowledgeable about what they were teaching. Professors were understanding and cared about your needs.
Cost4More expensive than other schools I have attended. This is expected, though, because it is a private University.
Schedule Flexibility4Class schedule was a little limited which is why I ended up taking more online classes. Would have like to see some more evening classes.
Academic Facilities7The facilities are very clean. Buildings have a great, warm, comforting feel to them. The library is adequate to study in.
Social Life3I did not have much of a social experience because of the online classes and late night classes. Not a whole lot of parties happening on campus, but there are things to do.
Placement Services7Assistance in finding a job is available through the school. The have decent connections to find you leads. They have a decent portfolio of contacts.
Alumni Network3There is support at the college but there is not a whole lot of alumni due to its student class size. Teachers have very good connections.

"Well, it is a step up above a community college. However, I was somewhat disappointed with this school."

Ratings are on a 1-10 scale

CharacteristicRatingComment
Would Recommend?noThe school isn't worth attending when there are other schools out there, like the University of Phoenix. The only reason one would go here is because of the fact that it is a Christian University, if that's what they want. The focus is more on religion and less on education. Students here will not make it into the real world without some other education.
School Reputation4The employers were like ghosts. The reputation is poor.
Satisfaction With Major5The classes online were not very focused on the teaches of old psychology, such as Sigmund Freud. Also, it felt average compared to online classes with University of Phoenix in terms of depth with subject matter.
Instruction5I learned a lot about abnormal psychology, personality disorders, and other topics studied in psychology. However, there were not a lot of opportunities involving internships, so I have had to search for my own that are not affiliated with Grand Canyon University.
Cost5You get what you paid for. I obviously forgot that I paid to go to a school that offers online courses in Phoenix that isn't University of Phoenix.
Schedule Flexibility10I have to admit that Grand Canyon University had a lot of flexibility involving weekend and evening options. Summer offerings were average compared to other schools I found, but the online options really helped.
Academic Facilities5Grand Canyon did not impress me with its facilities. In fact, this is one reason I have decided to go to High Point University.
Social Life1School Spirit? This school offers online courses. This is like University of Phoenix having school spirit, meaning none whatsoever. School spirit was lacking at Grand Canyon University.
Placement Services6The school's placement rate is somewhat high. However, the career services section did not help me find an internship.
Alumni Network6The network within the school was surprisingly well connected. However, there was not a lot of support involving internships as mentioned earlier.
