About the School
Harrington College of Design was established in 1931 as an offshoot of lectures by Frances Harrington, an interior designer, in Chicago. The strong interest in her lectures led Ms. Harrington to create the school. Harrington College now provides undergraduate degree programs in the fields of interior design, digital photography and communication design. Hands-on training is a major part of the curriculums.
Academic Programs
- Interior Design Associate Degree – The program provides plenty of hands-on training and offers a thorough review of the industry. The program is structured to provide students with a solid design foundation and teaches a variety of drawing techniques. In addition, the courses encourage experimentation.
- Digital Photography Associate Degree – The commercial digital photography curriculum offers the basics of photography, studio practices and imaging. The program includes a portfolio presentation, a laboratory filled with essential equipment and training with industry-current software. Business and legal information are also part of the program.
- Interior Design Bachelor's Degree Program – Offers the knowledge and skills necessary to become a certified interior designer. Creating a portfolio and externships are also part of the program.
- Communications Design Program – The curriculum offers training in graphic design, art direction, writing, motion graphics, illustration, production and other topics. Students are prepared to manage an entire brand identity campaign and design a magazine.
Learning Options
- The college utilizes a 15-week semester system
- Classes are offered in the morning, afternoon and in the evening and on Saturdays.

Student Life
The student council plans social events and is involved with volunteer activities. Harrington College of Design offers an American Society of Interior Design Student Chapter, which provides students opportunities to make connections with professionals. The college also offers information regarding numerous organizations that can help students make connections in the industry and with other students. In addition, the Career Services Department assists students and graduates find employment in their selected field. The college also offers a design library which contains a large number of resources.
Admissions and Financial Aid
