About the School
The Hypnosis Motivation Institute (HMI) was founded in 1968 by Dr. John Kappas, who wrote and defined the profession of a hypnotherapist in 1973 in the Federal Dictionary of Occupational Titles, which remains unchanged today. Located in Tarzana, California, HMI is a non-profit, nationally accredited college and clinic of hypnotherapy, helping individuals deal with hundreds of issues such as smoking, weight loss, grief, and public speaking.
HMI offers both resident training at their Southern California campus, as well as a distant learning program. Students enrolled in the resident program perform an internship at their clinic, home to over 50 Hypnotherapists and providing more than 250,000 hours of service over the past 40 years. The Institute offers no-charge courses, and additional certifications in Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) and Therapeutic Imagery. HMI is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET), an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Academic Programs
The Hypnosis Motivation Institute offers the following programs:
- Resident Program for Hypnotherapy: For residents of Southern California, this is an extensive, one-year training and clinical internship program. Training is presented in six sequential steps, with students attending school two evenings a week plus a minimum of one Saturday morning per month.
- Distant Program for Hypnotherapy: For non-residents of Southern California, this is a nine-module, interactive online learning program, with one-on-one on-line streaming video lessons with a personal tutor.
In addition, HMI offers certification in Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) and Therapeutic Imagery.
Learning Options
Students enrolled in the resident program can continue to work full-time at their current jobs, while attending classes two evenings a week plus a minimum of one Saturday morning per month. For those in the distant learning program, students can attend class during the day or night, when it is convenient. Both options include interaction with other students, either in the classroom or through HMI's Virtual Classroom.
Faculty
HMI hires faculty that are highly qualified and active in the private practice of hypnotherapy. The school is home to over 50 Hypnotherapists.
Student Life
With flexible training options, students can maintain their current lifestyle while enrolled in HMI's programs. HMI has a 10,000 square foot campus and clinical facility at their Tarzana location. The school also has a Student Center to assist students.
Admissions and Financial Aid
HMI has several requirements for applicants. All students must be 18 years of older, with a high school diploma or GED equivalent. A personal interview with an Admissions Representative is required. In addition, students must pass a Career Programs Assessment Test (CPAT), and undergo a Temperament Analysis Profile, with results falling within an acceptable range.
The Financial Aid Department at HMI assists all students with the financial aid process. Many options are available for qualified students, including Federal Stafford Loans, PLUS Loans, and private loans.
