About the School
Located in Independence, Missouri, Independence College of Cosmetology is an internationally recognized leader of beauty school programs. Independence College of Cosmetology was founded in 1960 by Don and Leila Cohoon, and is currently directed by their daughter, Linda Clifford. The College offers three certificate programs in Basic Cosmetology, Esthetics, and Instructor Training. The mission of the school is to provide a world class education with a higher level of customer satisfaction, promote pride, self-esteem and motivation, and prepare students to pass the State Board exams for careers around the world.
Independence College of Cosmetology offers students comprehensive curriculums, using Pivot Point International training as the basis of the hairdressing curriculum and the CIDESCO training curriculum for the Esthetics program. Certificates are awarded upon completion of the programs, with students eligible to sit for State Board exams. Independence College of Cosmetology is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS).
Academic Programs
Independence College of Cosmetology offers the following three comprehensive programs:
- Basic Cosmetology Program: Program taking 1500 hours with the goal of enabling students to pass the State Board Exam for professional cosmetology license to perform any standard cosmetology service in a beauty salon or spa.
- Esthetics Program: Program taking 1500 hours with the goal of analyzing and treating various skin problems through the use of massages, machines and products, including make-up and hair removal techniques, and the business practices of a skin care operation. Graduates of this program are trained to meet the CIDESCO International requirements, as well as the requirements for the State of Missouri.
- Teacher's Program: Program taking 600 hours to train students to pass the State Board Exam and receive an Instructor’s License. Graduates will be able to teach any phase of cosmetology and be familiar with creating lesson plans and curriculums.
Learning Options
Programs at Independence College of Cosmetology may be completed on a full-time or part-time schedule. Full-time programs are generally 35 hours per week over five days, with part-time programs at 23 hours per week over five days. New classes begin every seven weeks with previous classes rotating into the next segment of training.

Independence College of Cosmetology has one commuter location in Independence, Missouri. Students learn in a state-of-the-art facility with free parking.
Admissions and Financial Aid
Students interested in attending Independence College of Cosmetology must have a high school diploma or GED certificate, and have reached the age of 17 prior to taking the State Board Exams. Students also must be free of contagious diseases, possess good moral character, meet with a school official for a personal interview, and pass an entrance exam. The College admits all students who meet these basic qualifications, and applications are available on-line.
Independence College of Cosmetology does participate in financial aid programs for those students who qualify, and students should contact the Director of Admissions for additional information.
