About the School

Since 1995, the Institute for Therapeutic Massage (ITM) has been has been providing students with professional massage therapy training programs. ITM has eight locations in New Jersey, including hospital-based training programs at local area hospitals. The philosophy at Institute for Therapeutic Massage is to offer a learning environment to help students achieve the highest level of massage knowledge and skills through a combination of academic study and hands-on techniques using the most current research in therapeutic massage.

ITM offers six different massage programs, including advanced coursework in medical and oncology massage. In addition, ITM offers over 30 continuing education classes to Certified Massage Therapists. The Institute for Therapeutic Massage is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA), the only specialized accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education with a primary focus on massage education.

Academic Programs

The Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy offers the following massage training programs:

  • Massage and Bodywork Program: Comprehensive training in the art and science of massage therapy, preparing graduates to sit for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCE).
  • Clinical Massage Therapy Program: Combination of the Massage and Bodywork Program with the Eastern Bodywork/Shiatsu Program, designed for those individuals with no prior training or experience in massage therapy. Students are able to sit for the National Certification Examination.
  • Massage Therapy and Personal Training Program: Developed to accommodate the growing need for qualified health and wellness professionals, providing graduates with extensive knowledge in the art and science of human movement, nutrition, exercise and bodywork, as well as the ability to perform massage for wellness and sports. Graduates will be prepared to take the national certification examination given by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and The National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCE).
  • Oncology Massage Certification Program: Developed to accommodate the fast growing need for qualified health and wellness professionals interested in performing medical massage on patients who currently have, or are a survivor of cancer. This program is the first COMTA accredited program of its kind in the United States, with students able to sit for the National Certification Examination.
  • Eastern Bodywork (Shiatsu) Program: Developed for students desiring to become a Shiatsu practitioner, giving students a thorough knowledge of eastern philosophies and Shiatsu. Graduates are prepared and eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination (NCE) in Massage and Bodywork.
  • Hospital Based Massage Therapy Program: Advanced program developed in conjunction with the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ - Newark) and Morristown Memorial Hospital, giving massage therapists the opportunity to work with doctors, nurses, and hospital patients to learn how to master the art and science of medically based massage in a real clinical setting.

ITM also offers over 30 continuing education programs for massage therapists and other health care professionals.

Learning Options

Classes at ITM are academically comprehensive and professionally up-to-date. Students have the option in most programs of attending classes during the daytime or evening, with all programs including hands-on learning in massage clinics. Many opportunities are available to participate in weekend electives to enhance a student's knowledge and massage practice.

Faculty

Students at ITM benefit from knowledgeable faculty who are professionals with real-world experience. The faculty have extensive experience in massage.

Students at ITM benefit from a supportive learning environment through personal attention, and resources such as a school library, guest lecturers, and career and job placement.

Admissions and Financial Aid

The Institute for Therapeutic Massage requires students to be 18 years or older and be a high school graduate, or the equivalent. Students must show proof with a high school transcript, GED score report, or college transcript. Students must also be proficient in English. Finally, IMT also requires students be in good health, free of communicable diseases, and have no medical problems that will interfere with training, and must verify this with a signed statement from a doctor that they are in sound physical and mental health.

The Financial Aid Department at ITM offers students have a number of options with regards to paying for tuition. Federal financial aid is available for those that qualify, as well as interest free plans, and Sallie Mae loans. Interested students should contact the school for more information.
