About the School
Mississippi University for Women (MUW), the nation's first public university for women, has been coeducation for 25 years and offers culinary training at the MUW Culinary Arts Institute. Using classic cooking techniques in small quantity food preparation, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Culinary Arts to become a culinary specialist. MUW Culinary Arts Institute is located in Shattuck Hall, one of the 24 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places on the MUW campus in Columbus, Mississippi.
Academic Programs
Students at MUW Culinary Arts Institute earn a Bachelor of Science in Culinary Arts upon completion of the program, with the total program requiring 124 semester hours. Students must complete MUW's "core curriculum" as part of the degree program. Courses offered for the culinary major include an introductory to culinary arts, food microbiology, nutrition, food preparation, dining room services, world cuisine, business skills in the culinary arts, to name a few. In addition, students choose a minor area to study including entrepreneurship, food journalism, food art, or nutrition wellness.
Learning Options
The MUW Culinary Arts Institute is located in the historic Shattuck Hall, with a fully equipped kitchen furnished by Viking Corporation. Students are given the opportunity throughout the year to cater campus and local events.
Faculty
The faculty at MUW Culinary Arts Institute all have a culinary background, with students taught by degreed chefs, nutritionists, food stylists, and food managers and owners. MUW has a 12:1 student to faculty ratio, allowing faculty to provide personalized attention.
Student Life
MUW has an active campus life, with a student body population of approximately 2,400, with more than 75 student organizations, competitive intramural sports teams, fitness classes, art exhibits, films, plays, and nationally known speakers, among others. Students have a wide range of activities and opportunities to become involved in on campus.
Admissions and Financial Aid
MUW offers an online application to begin the process, with students required to submit their high school transcripts or GED certificate, along with any ACT scores. Students are encouraged to visit the MUW campus and schedule a tour.
The Financial Aid Center at MUW provides quality service and financial assistance to all eligible students, and encourages students to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In addition to Federal and State aid, the school also offers payment plans, pre-paid tuition savings programs, and alternative and private student loans.
