About the School

The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) has been a leader in fitness training certification and providing advanced credentials to health and fitness professionals since 1987. The mission of NASM is to provide health and fitness professionals with the best evidence-based education and systems. The CEO of NASM is Dr. Michael Clark, a researcher, educator, and author who serves as the physical therapist for the NBA's Phoenix Suns. In addition to three health and fitness certifications, NASM offers more than 20 home study courses for health and fitness professionals, and also offers several web-based bachelor's and master's degrees through the Arizona School of Health Science at A.T. Still University, and California University of Pennsylvania.

Academic Programs

NASM offers the following three certification programs:

  • Certified Personal Training (CPT) – NCAA accredited program preparing students for a career as a CPT. This program is designed for entry-level students to seasoned fitness professionals, teaching the necessary skills to develop and modify exercises safely and effectively for clients.
  • Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) – Program designed for athletic trainers, chiropractors, physical therapists, coaches and other sports professionals, teaching progressive, integrated training techniques to keep athletes performing at the highest level.
  • Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) – Program designed for professionals to assist clients with musculoskeletal impairments, muscle imbalances and rehabilitation concerns.

In addition, NASM offers a Master of Science degree in Human Movement through the Arizona School of Health Science at A.T. Still University, as well as three Master of Science degrees and one Bachelor of Science degree at California University of Pennsylvania. The school also offers over 95 live personal training workshops in over 33 cities across the United States.

Learning Options

Students at National Academy of Sports Medicine can purchase different certification course packages, depending on their experience level and needs, from the basic option of only purchasing the certification exam, to more complete packages including textbooks, study guides, presentations, DVDs, iPod and MP3 files, among others. Courses at the National Academy of Sports Medicine are taught via an online platform, where the school handles the distribution of learning materials. Once a package is purchased, the student has a certain timeframe in order to take the examination.

Student Life

Students across the Unites States can take advantage of live personal training workshops in over 33 cities to help prepare for certification exams and to enhance skills. All exams are given at LaserGrade/PSI testing centers, and students simply need to call the appointment center before the exam expiration date.

Admissions and Financial Aid

NASM requires CPT candidates to be at least 18 years old, with a current Emergency Cardiac Care (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification. PES and CES candidates require students to have a current NAMS-CPT certification, and a four-year collegiate degree in a related field or a REPs Level 3 or higher credential. NASM's web-based degrees have additional requirements.

Financial aid is not available for certification products, but may be available for qualified students of web-based degree programs.
