About the School
Samra University of Oriental Medicine is a private, non-profit corporation. In 1979 it became the first school of Oriental medicine to receive full institutional approval from the California State Department of Education. The university offers the Master's of Science in Oriental Medicine program, the Doctor's Degree Program in Oriental Medicine and continuing education classes. Clinical training at Samra University of Oriental Medicine provides a synthesis of ancient traditions and modern medical science and technologies.
Academic Programs
- Master's of Science in Oriental Medicine program - Includes courses in Chinese medical theory, Chinese Herbology, acupuncture theory, Western sciences and biomedicine. Students acquire hands-on experience treating a wide variety of illnesses and injuries. The program also includes a clinical internship. The program meets the didactic and clinical requirements of the California State Acupuncture Board. Graduates are eligible to take the California Acupuncture Licensing Examination. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Schools of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
- Doctor's Degree Program in Oriental Medicine - Offered to licensed acupuncturists seeking to expand their knowledge and clinic skills and obtain the terminal degree within the profession. Students complete a clinical specialty in pain management and a capstone research project. Doctoral residents perform their clinical training at the Samra Acupuncture Center.
Learning Options
The classes at Samra University of Oriental Medicine are taught separately in three languages: English, Korean and Mandarin Chinese. The university maintains affiliations with school of Traditional Oriental Medicine located in China. These affiliations provide students opportunities to continue their education in China after graduation.

Admissions and Financial Aid
Those seeking a degree are required to have earned grades of "C" or better in at least 90 quarter (60 semester) units in general education and/or technical courses related to the health sciences and Oriental medicine. The units need to be from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or from an equivalent foreign academic institution. A portion of the total may be in credits awarded by the university for training students received from a military service school and from acceptable standardized college tests.
Those not seeking a degree may be admitted in order to take a limited number and types of units. Non-degree seeking candidates are required to meet the same admissions requirements as regular matriculating students. Regarding financial aid, federal financial aid and other types of financial assistance are available for those who qualify.
