About the School

Since 1978, the Sarasota School of Massage Therapy (SSMT) has been training students to become skilled massage therapists. Located in Sarasota, Florida, SSMT has had several changes of ownership and locations throughout the years while maintaining its commitment to creating a comprehensive massage training program. Students in the Massage Therapy Program learn all of the essential skills needed to become a licensed massage therapist for careers in medical clinics and offices, spas and resorts, health and fitness centers, and cruise ships. Sarasota School of Massage Therapy is accredited by two agencies, the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE), and the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA).

Academic Programs

SSMT offers one program, a Massage Therapy Program, teaching students to master the practical skills of a massage therapist. Throughout the program, students will gain the knowledge and skills to become a successful bodyworker, and will work with the general public at the school's student clinic. Other topic areas covered in this program include: writing and keeping client records; business skills, ethics and attitudes for success; and CPR and Basic First Aid. At the completion of the program, students will be prepared and eligible for Florida licensure as a Massage Therapist, as well as being eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

SSMT also offers continuing education courses and seminars for practicing professionals throughout the year.

Learning Options

Classes at SSMT start frequently, and students have the choice of attending during the day or evening. Daytime classes are held five days per week, and can be completed in seven months. Evening classes are held three nights per week, with a program completion time of 11 months. The school limits the enrollment to 20 students per class. A resource library is available at the school to assist students with their studies, including books, CD-ROMS, videotapes, and local and national journals.

Faculty

Students at SSMT benefit from experienced instructors, many of whom have been teaching at the school for over ten years. All instructors have experience in the field of bodywork. The school also hosts knowledgeable guest instructors for various courses, including CPR, First Aid, HIV/AIDS education, and some professional and personal development classes.

Student Life

SSMT is a commuter school, but has housing resources for interested students. The school has a modern facility, with tubular skylights and windows for abundant natural light, and ceiling-mounted projectors and a high-end audio system. The school provides a high quality massage table to each student as part of the program, which is kept by the student after graduation. Staff at SSMT gives guidance and support to students and are available to advise, assist and counsel students regarding coursework, technique, or job opportunities. Ongoing placement assistance is provided to graduates.

Community outreach is a vital part of the program at the SSMT, with students participating as volunteers at local charitable organizations and events. In addition, more than 10% of the school's annual net profits are donated to charitable organizations involved in environmental, peace and social justice issues.

Admissions and Financial Aid

SSMT requires students to be 18 years or older and be a high school graduate, or GED equivalent, and must submit any diplomas, certificates, or transcripts to the school. Students must also have received at least one professional massage by a licensed therapist or student at the SSMT clinic. In addition, students must submit a SSMT physician's statement, signed by a licensed physician. Admissions representatives are available to assist students with the process, and it is recommended that interested students tour the facility and sit in on a class.

SSMT is nationally accredited and offers financial assistance to qualified students including Federal loans, needs-based scholarships, VA benefits, and interest-free payment plans. Students should apply for financial aid as part of the enrollment process.
