The Academy of Art University is a proprietary, private university owned by the Stephens Institute. It was established in San Francisco in 1929 as the Academy of Art Advertising by Richard S. Stephens. As of 2011 the university has enrolled more than 17,000 full-time and part-time students. It is one of the largest art and design schools in the United States.
