Albany Tech was founded in 1961 as the Monroe Area Vocational-Technical School. Albany Area Vocational-Technical School was established later. The two schools merged in 1972. The Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education, which is part of the Technical College System of Georgia, was formed in 1988. The renamed Albany Technical Institute was put under its direction. It was charged with offering technical education to the businesses, industries, and residents of seven counties including Baker, Clay, Calhoun, Lee, Dougherty, Terrell, and Randolph.
At present, Albany Tech offers associate degrees and operates adult learning centers in all the counties mentioned above. Along with the traditional avenues of education, the college also provides distance and online learning facilities.
