Overview

Alice Lloyd College, which is based in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, is a four-year liberal arts work college that was founded in 1923 by the journalist Alice Spencer Geddes Lloyd and June Buchanan. The objective in starting this school was to provide education locally to the leaders of the Appalachian region. They originally named it Caney Junior College.

Alice Lloyd College is one of the eight existing work colleges in the US. It requires its students to participate in a work-study program which involves working for a minimum of 10 hours per week. The tuition of Students eligible for admission at the college and coming from any of 108 counties within the Appalachian region of Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and Ohio is paid through the Appalachian Leaders College Scholarship.

Alice Lloyd College participates in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and sponsors teams for basketball, baseball, softball, cross country and cheerleading. Its athletic teams are called the Eagles.
