Overview
Allen University is a historically black, coeducational, private college. It was established in 1870 as Payne Institute in Cokesbury, and was dedicated to providing education for freed African-American slaves. After being relocated to Columbia, its name was changed to Allen University in the honor of Bishop Richard Allen. The college remains associated to the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Allen University offers its students with bachelor’s degree in both arts and science. It offers majors in biology, business administration, English, chemistry, fine arts, music, religion, military science and health courses. The college also offers the facility of providing orientation courses, adult learning, and general education courses for students.
Allen University has an active Greek life consisting of honor societies like Sigma Tau Delta, Sigma Phi Omega, and Phi Beta Lambda. The college also has a number of co-curricular clubs such as Music Club, Drama Club, Biology Club, Speech and Debate Club, and English Club.
