Overview
Appalachian State University, also referred to as App State, ASU, or App, is a coeducatiuonal, public university located in Boone, Carolina, United States. It was established in 1889 as Watauga Academy. On March 9, 1903, it was renamed Appalachian Training School for Teachers. In 1925, the name was changed to Appalachian State Normal School. The next re-christening of the institution took place in 1929, and the name became Appalachian State Teachers College. Finally, it gained university status and became Appalachian State University in 1967.
The University presently comprises of five colleges and one graduate school including:

- College of Fine and Applied Arts
- Cratis D. Williams Graduate School
- Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music
- Reich College of Education
- Walker College of Business
Appalachian State University campus is home to more than 20 Greek-letter fraternities and sororities. These fraternities and sororities include Alpha Phi, Kappa Delta, Sigma Kappa, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Theta Chi, and Tau Kappa Epsilon.
The atheltic teams are called the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The official mascot is Yosef the mountaineer. The University sponsors baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, wrestling, volleyball, and softball.
Notable alumni of the University include Eric Church, country music singer; Ron Prince, Head football coach at Kansas State University; and Melissa Morrison-Howard, two-time Olympic bronze medalist in the hurdle race in 2000 and 2004.
