Arizona State University - Tempe

Arizona State University, or ASU, is the largest public research university in the United States in terms of enrollment.

The school was founded in 1885 as the Tempe Normal School, with land donated by Tempe residents George and Martha Wilson. After undergoing several name and mission changes, it gained the status of a university in 1958.

ASU Tempe is one of four distinctive campuses throughout metropolitan Phoenix, focusing and research and graduate education along with an undergraduate educate that is analytic and preparatory for graduate or professional school or employment.

The university is arranged around broad pedestrian malls and encompassed by an arboretum.

The other locations of ASU are the Polytechnic, West, and Downtown Phoenix campuses.

Many of the university's programs were ranked in the top 50 by U.S. News and World Report in 2005. That same year, the Education Policy Studies doctoral program was ranked 15th, and six out of nine of the college's specialty programs were ranked in the Top 20.

Arizona State University is a member of the PAC-10 athletic conference. Athletes, students and alumni of the university are known as the "Sun Devils, with a mascot, Sparky, designed by Disney illustrator Bert Anthony.

ASU's Sun Devil Involvement Center is an active extracurricular program with more than 450 registered clubs and other campus organizations. These include sororities and fraternities, community service projects, and co-curricular programs.

Among the university's notable alumni are Steve Allen, writer, comedian, musician and "Father of the TV Talk Show"; Sal Bando, former Major League Baseball player; Reggie Jackson, former MLB player, member of Baseball Hall of Fame; Amanda Brown, author of Legally Blonde; Amanda Borden, 1996 Summer Olympics Gold Medal Winner in gymnastics; Cecil Heftel, former U.S. Representative; Doug Hopkins and Bill Leen, musicians in Gin Blossoms; Phil Mickelson, professional golfer; and the late Pat Tillman, former National Football Player, and U.S. Army Corporal.
