Overview

Art Center College of Design, also known as Art Center, was established in 1930 as the Art Center School. The school ran a technical illustration program during World War II along with the California Institute of Technology. It became a bachelor and master degree-granting institution in 1949 and adopted its present name in 1965. The college moved to its current location in 1976. It has two campuses in Pasadena, California. The Hillside Campus, which was opened in November 1974, sits on more than 170 acres of land. The South Campus was established in 2004.

Art Center encourages all its students to become involved in the on-campus clubs and organizations. These organizations are based on academic, religious, cultural, recreational, and social interests of the students. The college's Student Government includes elected members who represent students' concerns to the administration.

Art Center was granted Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status in 2003 by the United Nations and was the first design college to receive such a status.
