Overview

Athens State University is a coeducational, public university located in Athens, Alabama, United States. It was founded under the name of Athens Female Academy in the year 1822. It became coeducational in 1931 and was named Athens College. In 1974, the responsibilities of maintaining the college were taken over by the State of Alabama, and the name of the institute was once again changed to Athens State College. Finally, in 1998, the institute received university status and was christened Athens State University. It now grants admission to more than 2,500 students every year.

Athens State University offers classes through the following colleges:

The students' clubs and organizations under Athens State University include the Art Club, Council for Exceptional Children, Health and Science Career Club, Math and Computer Science Club, Physical Education Club, African-American History Association, and Accounting Club.

The official mascot of the university's sports teams is the Bear. The athletic teams participate in intramural sports such as volleyball and table tennis.
