Overview
Auburn University, also referred to as "AU" or "Auburn", is a public, co-educational school located in Auburn, Alabama.
Established in 1858 as the East Alabama Male College only 20 years after the founding of the City of Auburn, the school underwent several name changes until it was awarded university status in 1960 and given its present moniker.
AU's campus stretches over more than 1800 acres of suburban land. In 1967, Auburn University at Montgomery was established as a separately administered branch campus

Among the school's many firsts and accomplishments are:
- First to offer a program in software engineering in the Southeast.

- A micorscope system NASA is using on Antarctic expeditions.

- A new egg-injected avian flu vaccine.
- A widely used flea pill for dogs.
Auburn University is home to many fraternities and sororities. Over 15 percent of males and more than 30 percent of females belong. The sororities are located in dormitories on a hill within the campus; each of these dormitories has a sorority chapter.
