Overview

Austin Peay State University, also referred to as APSU, is a coeducational, public, state-funded university located in Clarksville, Tennessee, United States. It was established in 1927 as the Austin Peay State Normal School for Rural White Teachers. The name was severely criticized later for the obvious racist tone, and it was changed to Austin Peay State College. In 1967, The College was granted University status and given its present name. Today, the University's campus stretches across more than 160 acres of urban land.

Austin Peay State University is organized into the following schools, associated departments, and colleges:

The University campus is home to a number of Greek-letter fraternities and sororities including Alpha Tau Omega, Pi Kappa Alpha, Alpha Gamma Rho, Phi Beta Sigma, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta.

APSU's athletic teams for men and women are called "Governors" and "Lady Governors" respectively. The official mascot of APSU is "Governors". The University sponsors baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Notable alumni of the University include Steve Adams, former Tennessee State Treasurer; Josh Rouse, Noted Singer-Songwriter; Bonnie Sloan, first hearing-impaired player in the NFL; and Mary C. Noble, Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court.
