Overview

Bates College is located in Lewiston, Maine, United States. It was established on March 16, 1855, and was the first coeducational college in New England. It was originally named Maine State Seminary. The Cobb Divinity School, which was founded in 1840, merged with the college in 1870. Reverend Oren Burbank Cheney, a Freewill Baptist minister, became the first president of the college. The college adopted its present name in 1864. Bates College encompasses more than 100 acres in Lewiston.

Bates College has approximately 90 student-run organizations and clubs. Some of these are the Bates' Christian Fellowship, Amnesty International, Christian Science Organization, Dharma Society, Bates Eating Awareness Association, Historical Society, and International Club.

Bates College competes in the New England Small College Athletic Conference and is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. Their athletic teams are known as the Bobcats.
