Overview

Boston University is an independent, coeducational and nonsectarian as well as leading private research and teaching institutions. It has two primary campuses in the heart of Boston, with the main campus encompassing 132 acres.

With an emphasis on involvement in the city where it is located, BU has been described as "in the heart of the city, in the service of the city."

Among the famous alumni of Boston University are the Rev. Martin Luther King, civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner; J Allard, Vice President of Microsoft; William Cohen, former U.S. Secretary of Defense; Kenneth Feld, CEO, Ringlikng Brothers Barnum & Bailey circus; Paul Dever, former Mayor of Massachusetts; Patricia Maldonado, former staff writer, Miami Herald, Pulitzer Prize winner; Jay Cashman, Boston construction mogul, founder of company named for him; Elizabeth Meyer Glaser, AIDS activist, child advocate; Edward Brooke, III, first African-American U.S. Senator since Reconstruction; and actors Jason Alexander, Craig Bierko, Olympia Dukakis, Faye Dunaway and Julianne Moore. Folk singer Joan Baez attended but not graduate.

The school is in the America East for major sports.
