Overview
Bowdoin College is located in Brunswick, Maine, United States. It was founded on June 24, 1794, and named after James Bowdoin, former governor of Massachusetts. The college became coeducation in 1971. It enrolls approximately 1,700 students every year. In addition, it has a coastal studies center located on Orrs Island in Harpswell and a scientific field station located on Kent Island in the Bay of Fundy. Bowdoin is named one of the top ten liberal arts colleges in the nation in the 2009 edition of U.S. News and World Report.
Bowdoin College has several student clubs and organizations such as the African-American Society, Art Union, Bowdoin Anime Club, Barbells for Babes, Bowdoin Film Group, Bowdoin Student Government, Bowdoin Women's Association, Community Service Council, Middle Eastern Belly Dance Ensemble, Latin American Student Organization, and The Yellow Bike Club.
Bowdoin College's athletic teams participate in the New England Small College Athletic Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. They are called the Polar Bears.
