Claflin University was established in 1869 by Methodist missionaries to help prepare the freed slaves for life as rightful American citizens. The University was named after two Methodist churchmen, William Claflin, a Massachusetts Governor and his father,and Lee Claflin, a Boston philanthropist. It was Lee Claflin who donated a major part of the funds required to purchase the campus. Claflin was the first university in South Carolina opened to all students regardless of their class, race, or gender.
Claflin University provides a broad based education in science and liberal arts along with other career-oriented programs. It also offers master degrees in business administration, biotechnology, and education in addition to 33 undergraduate majors. Claflin University has students from more than 20 states in the U.S. and 15 countries. Male students participate in sports such as baseball, tennis, basketball, and track and field. Female students participate in softball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, and track and field.

StudentsClaflin is a historically black college. Student enrollment was 1,763 in 2007-2008 (1,740 full-time equivalent). About 37% of the freshmen class in 2008-2009 was male and women were 63% of the class. Undergrads are 94% of enrolled students and graduate students are 6%. About 3% of freshmen are from countries other than the US. Students living in the US make up 97% of incoming freshmen.

Housing and MealsClaflin provides on-campus housing for 1,003 of its 1,740 (full-time) students (as of 2008-2009). Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 19 meals weekly.
AthleticsThe school is in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for major sports. The school offers financial aid for athletes. Of students receiving athletic financial aid, 48 male students received the aid (men were 55% of those receiving aid) and 39 women were awarded financial aid based on athletics (representing 45% of students receiving such aid) .
