Overview

Claflin University was established in 1869 by Methodist missionaries to help prepare the freed slaves for life as rightful American citizens. The University was named after two Methodist churchmen, William Claflin, a Massachusetts Governor and his father,and Lee Claflin, a Boston philanthropist. It was Lee Claflin who donated a major part of the funds required to purchase the campus. Claflin was the first university in South Carolina opened to all students regardless of their class, race, or gender.

Claflin University provides a broad based education in science and liberal arts along with other career-oriented programs. It also offers master degrees in business administration, biotechnology, and education in addition to 33 undergraduate majors. Claflin University has students from more than 20 states in the U.S. and 15 countries. Male students participate in sports such as baseball, tennis, basketball, and track and field. Female students participate in softball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, and track and field.
