Overview

Clemson University is a public, coeducational, research university located in Clemson, South Carolina.

In his will, Thomas Green Clemson bequeathed his Fort Hill plantation and a considerable sum from his personal assets for the establishment of an educational institution that would teach scientific agriculture and the mechanical arts to South Carolina's young people.

In 1889, Gov. John Peter Richardson signed the bill accepting Clemson's gift, which established the Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina.

Clemson College formally opened in July 1893 with an enrollment of 446, as an all-male military school. In 1955, the change was made to civilian status for students, and Clemson became a coeducational institution.

In 1964, the college was renamed Clemson University in formal recognition by the Legislature of its expanded academic offerings and research pursuits.

The university has a 17,000-acre campus in the rural area of Clemson.

The colleges that comprise Clemson University are:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences
  • Architecture, Arts and Humanities
  • Business and Behavioral Sciences
  • Engineering and Science
  • Health, Education and Human Development

Clemson is ranked as the 22nd best national public university by U.S. News and World Report. According to The 2009 Princeton Review, the university's students are ranked as the nation's happiest.

Clemson University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Bachelor, Master, Education Specialist, and Doctor degrees.

Clemson University does not have traditional Greek housing on campus. Instead, separate halls are provided for Greek fraternities and sororities within the hostels. Nearly 20% of undergraduate students are members of Greek houses.

The athletic teams are called the Tigers. The official mascot is The Tiger and The Cub. The college sponsors various sports, including football, soccer, and golf.

Notable alumni include James F. Byrnes, former U.S. Secretary of State; Strom Thurmond, former U.S. Senator; Robert H. Brooks, founder and chair of Naturally Fresh Dressings, Sauces and Dips--for whose late son, Mark, the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts is named; Larry Nance, former NBA forward, three-time NBA All-Star; Terry Allen, former NFL running back, All-time leading rusher in NFL history; Donnell Woolford, former NFL defensive back, pro bowler; Jay Berger, professional tennis player ranked as high as #7 in the world; Mitzi Kremer, 1998 Olympic Bronze Medalist in swimming; Lee Brice, country music singer; Aquilla J.
