Colorado State University

Colorado State University is a coeducational, public institution located in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was originally established as the Colorado Agricultural College in 1870--six years before the Colorado Territory gained statehood--and went through additional name changes before being called by its present name in 1957.

CSU is a land-grant institution and in 2008 was selected as a Carnegie Research University (for very high research activity)

Money Magazine ranked Fort Collins as the second Best Place to Live" in America in 2008. In 2006, it was ranked "Best Place to Live.

Students come from every state and more than 80 foreign countries.

Colorado State University's main campus stretches across 579 acres in central Fort Collins. CSU also encompasses the Foothills Campus, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Agricultural Campus, and the Pingree Park mountain campus.

Facilities include the new University for the Arts, including a music hall, concert hall, theater, dance and art museum.

CSU, a member of the NCAA at the Division I level-Mountain West Conference, sponsors 16 intercollegiate sports programs. The football team won its fifth bowl game in program history in 2008, defeating Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl.

Among the notable alumni of Colorado State University are actors John Amos and Keith Carradine, Academy Award winner; Baxter Black, cowboy poet; Steve Fairchild, former NFL offensive coordinator, current CSU football head coach; Samuel Walter McCandless, aerospace engineer turned technology consultant, perhaps best known as father of Chris McCandless of Into the Wild fame; Bill Ritter, Governor of Colorado, former Denver District Attorney; Ken Rominger, astronaut; Kim Ung-Yong, highest IQ (Guinness Book of Records); Amy Van Dyken, Olympic swinner, Gold Medalist; and Van Wolverton, author of Running MS_DOS and many other technical books.

Housing and Meals

Colorado State provides on-campus housing for 5,240 of its 24,272 (full-time) students (as of 2008-2009). The school requires freshmen to live on campus.

Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 21 meals weekly.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Mountain West Conference for major sports.
