Dowling College was established in 1955 when Adelphi College offered extension classes in Sayville, Riverhead and Port Jefferson. It became a private college in 1968 after severing ties with Adelphi. It was then renamed after Robert Dowling, the chief benefactor of the college and a philanthropist, city planner and aviator. Dowling College is made up of the following campuses:
- Brookhaven Campus in Shirley
- Melville Center in Melville
- Rudolph Campus in Oakdale
Dowling College offers enrollment to more than 6,000 full and part-time graduate and undergraduate students. Courses leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees, pre-professional certificates and advanced certificates are available at this college. There are 4 schools under Dowling College:

The sports teams of Dowling College are called the Golden Lions. Its men's soccer team won the Division II National Championship in 2006.
