Overview

Eastern Michigan University, also referred to as "EMU", is a coeducational, public university. It is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States. The University was initially established as Michigan State Normal School in 1849. It was renamed several times, first as Michigan State Normal College (1899), then as Eastern Michigan College (1956), and finally as Eastern Michigan University in 1959, after it gained university status. EMU campus stretches over nearly 800 acres of urban land.

The University is home to a number of fraternities and sororities with approximately 4% of students as members. Alpha Sigma Tau, a national sorority, was founded at the University on November 4, 1899. It still exists in the University after a century, proudly heading the Alpha chapter.

The University sports team is called the Eagles. The official mascot is Swoop the Eastern Eagle.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Mid-American Conference for major sports.
