Overview

Eastern Washington University, or EWU, was established in 1882 as the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy. It was founded by Benjamin Pierce Cheney and named after him. The academy was renamed to State Normal School in 1889, and to Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937. It became the Eastern Washington State College in 1961 and gained university status in 1977. EMU encompasses more than 300 acres in Cheney, Washington. The university has another campus in Spokane. EMU is organized into the following academic units:

  • School of Social Work & Human Services

EMU has officially recognized more than ten fraternities and approximately nine sororities. Some of these Greek organizations are the Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Chi, Omega Psi Phi, Pi Lambda Phi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Kappa Delta Chi, Alpha Phi, Sigma Lambda Gamma, and Zeta Phi Beta.
