Overview

Elizabeth City State University, also known as ECSU, is located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, United States. It was established in 1891 as a two-year Normal School. It was founded by the North Carolina General Assembly and is a historically black university. The university became a four-year teachers college in 1937 and was named Elizabeth City State Teachers College. It became Elizabeth City State College in 1963 and settled on its present name in 1969. The campus encompasses approximately 200 acres in Elizabeth City. ECSU offers an array of degrees and certificate programs through the following academic units:

ECSU has an active Greek. Some of these fraternities and sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Phi Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, Phi Beta Sigma, and Nu Gamma Psi. In addition, there are several student organizations such as the American Chemical Society, Mass Media Club, Students in Free Enterprise, Music Industry Studies Club, Pre-Alumni Club, and ECSU Technology Club.
