Overview

Emory University is a diverse private university recognized for its liberal arts college, professional schools, and healthcare system. The university generates a great deal of research funding, while maintaining a traditional emphasis on teaching.

Emory is located in the City of Atlanta, one of the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan areas. The university maintains active partnerships with many of the city's prominent institutions, such as The Carter Center and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It was established in 1836. Emory is named after John Emory, a popular bishop of the Georgia Methodist Conference.

In its 2010 edition, U.S. News & World Report ranked the university's undergraduate program 17th among national universities,[6] while ranking the medical, law, and business programs among the top 25 in the country.[7][8][9] In 2008, Emory received $411.2 million in total research funding awards, more than any other university in Georgia.[10]The university is ranked 18th among national universities according to U.S. News & World Report.

Famous Emory University alumni include Newt Gingrich, Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives; Kenneth Cole, fashion designer and activist; and Emily Saliers and Amy Ray, better known as the folk/pop group Indigo Girls. Noted graduates of Oxford College, a division of the university, include Alben W. Barkley, 35th U.S. Vice President; Lucius Quintus Lamar II, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice and Mississippi Senator; Dumas Malone, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, former head of Harvard University Press; and Thomas M. Rivers, virologist, who headed National Science Foundation's search for a polio vaccine.

Emory has several varsity athletic teams in NCAA Division III. The university also has an active Greek life, with several fraternities and sororities. The fraternities have existed, officially and unofficially, since 1840. Several secret societies have emerged on the campus over the years. DVS is the oldest, founded on the Oxford campus in 1902.
