Erikson Institute,a private graduate institute and research center situated in Chicago, Illinois, was established in 1966 by Maria Piers, child psychologist; Barbara Taylor Bowman, educator and activist; Lorraine Wallach, social worker; and Irving B. Harris, businessman and philanthropist. The college was named for the renowned Danish-German-American developmental psychologist, Erik Homburger Erikson. Erikson Institute offers master’s degrees, doctoral degrees and certificates to students in early childhood, and child development education.
Erikson Institute has an active student life with several clubs and organizations. It has over 1,400 alumni. Some notable graduates of the college are Carol Brunson Day, president of National Black Child Development Institute; Leon Denton, manager, Head Start; and Toby Herr, director and founder of Project Match.
