Overview

Fitchburg State College was established in 1894 as the State Normal School in Fitchburg. John G. Thompson was the first president of the college. The college name was changed to State Teachers College at Fitchburg in 1932 and to State College at Fitchburg in 1960. It was given its present name in 1965. The college is located on 30 acres of land in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. It offers more than 50 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs.

Fitchburg State has officially recognized more than 60 student clubs and organizations. Some of them include the Student Government Association, English Club, Sigma Pi, Filmmaker's Society, Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Table Top Gaming Club, Phi Sigma Sigma, Biology Club, Nursing Student Association and Alpha Sigma Tau.

The athletics department of Fitchburg State fields several men's and women's sports teams like basketball, baseball, field hockey, football, cross country, soccer, ice hockey, track and field and lacrosse, which compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III and in the New England Football Conference.
