Overview

Fort Hays State University, also referred to as FHSU, is a public, coeducational university located in Hays, Kansas, United States. It was established in 1902 as the western branch of Kansas State Normal School, which at present is known as Emporia State University. The University was later renamed after Fort Hays because a large portion of its campus stands on land which was earlier occupied by Fort Hays. The University campus, along with its associated buildings, stretches over an area of more than 4100 acres of urban land.

The University is organized into the following colleges:

  • Arts and Sciences
  • Business and Leadership
  • Education and Technology
  • Health and Life Sciences

Fort Hays University sports teams are called the Tigers. The official mascot is the Tiger. The University sponsors football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, track and field, tennis, golf, rodeo, and shotgun shooting.

The most notable alumnus of FHSU is 95-year-old Nola Ochs, who became the world's oldest college graduate on May 12, 2007. She graduated with a degree in history. Ochs graduated with her 21-year-old granddaughter, Alexandra Ochs. The Guinness Record Book recognizes Ochs as the oldest person ever to finish college.
