Friends University was established in 1898. Its main building was actually built for Garfield University in 1886, but James Davis, a St. Louis businessman, donated it to the Religious Society of Friends in 1898. Although Friends University operates independently, it shares an amicable relation with the Society of Friends.
Friends University awards degrees in diverse areas of study through the following colleges –
- College of Business, Arts, Sciences and Education (CBASE)
- College of Adult Professional Studies (CAPS)
- Graduate School (GRAD)
CBASE, which is the undergraduate school of Friends University, provides degrees in Education, Business and Information Technology, Fine Arts, Mathematics, Natural Science and Social Behavioral Sciences, and Religion and Humanities. CAPS provide programs of general studies to working adults through the Program for Adult College Education (PACE), as well as a degree completion program. The Graduate School provides more than 10 Master degrees in disciplines such as Business, Christian Ministry, Teaching, Management, and Health Care.

Undergrads are 79% of enrolled students and graduate students are 21%. Students living in the US make up 100% of incoming freshmen. Among freshmen students, 100% are full-time and 0% are part-time.

Housing and MealsFriends provides on-campus housing for 353 of its 2,493 (full-time) students (as of 2008-2009). Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 19 meals weekly.
AthleticsSchool sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference for major sports. The school offers financial aid for athletes. Of students receiving athletic financial aid, 224 male students received the aid (men were 66% of those receiving aid) and 117 women were awarded financial aid based on athletics (representing 34% of students receiving such aid) .
