Overview
Gallaudet University is located in Washington, D.C., United States. It was originally established in 1856 as a school for deaf and blind children. In fact, it was the world’s first school of its kind. In 1864, the school was authorized to grant college degrees. In 1865, it became the Columbia Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb. The school's name was changed to Gallaudet College in 1954. It became a university in 1986 and received its current name. Gallaudet University was named after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.
Gallaudet University has many student clubs including the Asian-Pacific Association, Genesis and Science Organization, Latter-day Saints Student Association, Alpha Sigma Pi, Student Body Government, Black Deaf Student Union, Delta Zeta, Greek President Council, English Language Institute Student Organization, Phi Kappa Zeta, and Campus Crusade for Christ.
Gallaudet University competes in the Capital Athletic Conference as a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The sports teams are known as the Bison.
