Overview
Georgia Southern University, also referred to as GSU, is a public, coeducational, regional university located in Statesboro, Georgia, United States. It was established on December 1, 1906, as the First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. In the 1920s, the name was changed to Georgia Normal School and later changed to South Georgia Teacher's College. In 1959, it was re-christened as Georgia Southern College. Finally, in 1990, it was granted University status and given its present moniker. The University campus stretches across nearly 700 acres of urban and suburban land.

There are three governing bodies for Greek letter organizations on campus as well as a number of fraternities and sororities. Some important fraternities and sororities are Alpha Delta Pi, Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Xi Delta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma.
The University's athletic teams are known as Georgia Southern Eagles. The official mascots are Gus the Eagle and Glory and Freedom. The sports sponsored by the University include baseball, basketball, football, golf, tennis, volleyball, soccer, softball, and track & field.

Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 19 meals weekly.
Athletics
School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Southern Conference for major sports.
