Overview

Georgia State University is an urban research university located in the heart of downtown Atlanta.

/The university was established in 1913 as the Georgia School of Technology's "School of Commerce." After various name and status changes, it was renamed Georgia State University in 1969.

GSU is the only urban research university in the state.

A leading urban research institution, Georgia State has more than 250 fields of study through some 55 accredited degree programs at the bachelor's, master's, specialist and doctoral levels. Students may enroll in day or evening classes and in part-time or full-time study

GSU is home to more than 20 fraternities and sororities.

The university participates in 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic teams, who are nicknamed the Panthers. It is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association Conference.

Among the notable alumni of Georgia State University are Taj Anwar, model and activist; Joey Cape, musician of Lagwagon; Brad Cohen, teacher and author of Front of the Class: How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had; Lanard Copeland, former NBA player; Mary Hood, author; Lance Krall, actor; Jody Powell, White House Press Secretary, 1977-1980; Richard H. Lenny, retired chairman, president and CEO, the Hershey Company; and Ray Stevens, musician. Actor Julia Roberts attended but did not graduate.
