Overview

Indiana University Bloomington is the flagship campus of the Indiana University System. It is the residential campus of the university, which also has an urban campus in Indianapolis and six regional campuses in other cities in Indiana.

The Bloomington campus covers 1,933 acres.

Also known as IU, the university has more than 200 research centers and institutes.

IU is located within a day's drive of one quarter of the U.S. population.

In 1816, the first constitution of Indiana was adopted, providing for a general system of education from township schools to a state university. A state seminary was established in 1820; its name was changed to Indiana College five years later. Finally, a legislative act renamed the school Indiana University in 1838.

Time magazine named Indiana University Bloomington its "2001 College of the Year" among all the major research universities in the country.

IU's Greek system offers more than 45 fraternities and sororities. The university's intercollegiate athletic teams compete in several conferences, including the Big Ten, Missouri Valley and the Mid-Continent. The Hoosier athletic program on the Bloomington campus is the university's largest, with more than 24 varsity teams.

Famous alumni of IU include Tony Aiello, broadcast journalist; Jan Harold Brunvand, folklorist, one of the most well-known anthropologists of urban legends; Meg Cabot, author of The Princess Diaries; actor Kevin Kline; Will Shortz, puzzle maker; Kevin Stein, poet laureate of Illinois; John Chambers, president and CEO of Cisco System;s Patty Stonesifer, chairperson, Smithsonian Foundation; Hoagy Carmichael, songwriter-actor, author of "Georgia on My Mind"; Leonard Slatkin, composer and conductor; Seliim al-Hoss, prime Minister of Lebanon; Rog Paige, Secretary of Education; and James D. Watson, groundbreaking researcher of DNA structure, Nobel Prize Winner in 1962 in Physiology or Medicine. Jimmy Wales, cofounder of Wikipedia, attended but did not graduate.
