Overview
Johns Hopkins University, also known as Hopkins or JHU, was established in 1876.
The university was named after Baltimore merchant Johns Hopkins, whose $7 million bequest was the largest philanthropic gift up to that time. His bequest was used to establish both the university and The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
JHU was the first university in the Western Hemisphere based on the European research institution. This model greatly influenced U.S. higher education.
The university has an enrollment today of more than 20,000 full-time and part-time students on three major campuses. The main campus, known as Homewood, encompasses more than 135 acres in the northern part of Baltimore, Maryland. In addition, the university has campuses in Washington, D.C., and in Montgomery County, MD, as well as facilities throughout the Baltimore-Washington Area and in China and Italy.
The university and the Johns Hopkins Health System, a separate corporation, together constitute the state's largest private employer.
JHU is organized into the following academic divisions:
- Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies
- Carey Business School
- Whiting School of Engineering
- Peabody Institute
- School of Education
- School of Medicine
- Bloomberg School of Public Health
- School of Nursing
- Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences
Among the research findings at Johns Hopkins have been the first functional images of artists' brains to study the neurological underpinnings of creativity and spontaneity and the discovery that SSRI antidepressants rewire areas of the brain important to the autonomic nervous system as well as for thinking and feeling.
As of 2008, Johns Hopkins ranked first among U.S. universities in receipt of federal research and development funds. The university was 14th in U.S. News & World Report's Best National Universities in 2009; 14 in undergraduate engineering programs in schools offering a Ph.D., and number one in biomedical engineering.
Also in 2008, the School of Medicine ranked first among medical schools in receipt of extramural awards from the National Institutes of Health.
JHU has an active Greek Life, with more than ten fraternities and approximately eight sororities. The on-campus Greek organizations include Sigma Chi, Beta Theta Pi, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Sigma Omicron Pi, Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Lambda Phi Epsilon.
JHU's athletic teams are called the Blue Jays.
