Overview

Kean University is a metropolitan state university located in Union Township, Union County, New Jersey. It was founded in 1855 as the Newark Normal School.

Kean was granted university status on September 26, 1997. The university is named after the Kean family and Robert Winthrop Kean, who served New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives from 1939 to 1959.

Kean University has become one of New Jersey's largest institutions of higher learning. In 1958, Kean moved from Newark to Union and currently occupies over 150 acres in Union and Hillside Townships.

While maintaining its significant role in the training of teachers, Kean has become a comprehensive institution offering 48 undergraduate and 28 graduate degree programs serving some 13,000 students.

Kean is accredited by all major accrediting organizations. Many majors have accreditation in their fields.

Kean University is organized into the following academic divisions:

Kean has an active Greek life. There are several fraternities and sororities on campus, including Beta Kappa Psi, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Kappa Delta Tau.

The athletic teams are nicknamed the Cougars. The university is affiliated with the NCAA Division III, ECAC, the New Jersey Athletic Conference. It is a member of the Skyline Conference for lacrosse only.

Among the notable alumni of Kean University are Linda Morris, TV writer ("Frasier") and producer; Bruce Williams, talk radio host and columnist for "Smart Money"; Ed Naha, science fiction and mystery writer; Nellie Pou, member of the New Jersey General Assembly; James F. Sloan, assistant commandant for the U.S. Coast Guard; Maria Viscarrondo-De Soto, first woman and first Latina to become president and CEO of United Way of Essex and West Hudson; and Hela Youngst, TV entertainer, beauty pageeant queen and former president of the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education.
