Overview
Kent State University, also known as "Kent," "Kent State," or "KSU," is a coeducational, residential, public research university. The main campus is located in Kent, Ohio.
Kent State was initially established in 1910 as the Kent State Normal School. In 1915, the school was renamed Kent State Normal College and later, Kent State College. In 1935, the college received university status and was renamed to its present moniker.
The main campus stretches over more than 1300 acres of suburban land.
Kent State University ranks among America's top national universities, according to the 2010 edition of America's Best Colleges by U.S. News & World Report. It is in the top tier of rankings, the top 134-190 public and private universities in the Best National Universities category.

Kent State offers students 210 clubs and organizations and 1,000 programs, activities, and on-campus events.
Kent State University's athletics program includes baseball, men's and women's basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball, wrestling.
The athletic teams, named the Golden Flashers, play in the NCAA Division I and the Mid-American (East Division) Conference.
Famous alumni of Kent State include Stephen Baum, fashion designer and contestant on "Project Runway" (Season 5); Bertice Berry, sociologist, author; Emmanuel Burriss, pro baseball player; Michael Capellas, president of Hewlett-Packard; Drew Carey, actor, comedian; Joshua Cribbs, pro football player for Cleveland Browns; Arsenio Hall, talk show host; Chrissie Hynde, lead singer for The Pretenders; Michael Keaton, actor; Jack Lambert, former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker and Pro Football Hall of Famer; Mike Lebowitz, attorney in military law; Thurman Munson, former baseball player with New York Yankees, MLB Most Valuable Player; Alice Ripley, Tony Award-winning actor; Connie Schultz, columnist for The Plain Dealer, 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner; Harry Stout, religious historian; and Jim Corrigall, former defensive end for Toronto Argonauts and KSU head football coach.
