Overview

Laney College was established in 1953 as Oakland City College. It is the flagship campus of the Peralta Community College District. The college is spread over 60 acres in Oakland, California. As of June 2008, Laney College had more than 13,000 students, including approximately 500 international students. The college offers more than 40 degrees and about 28 certificate programs. It is organized into the following academic units:

  • Division of Business, Math, and Sciences
  • Division of Community Partnerships and Workforce Development
  • Division of Fine and Applied Arts, Communications, and Physical Education
  • Division of Humanities, Language Arts, and Social Sciences
  • Division of Vocational Technology

According to the Laney College Fact Sheet of June 2008, the college has 29% African American, 32% Asian, 16% White, and 13% Latino students.

The sports teams of Laney College are known as the Eagles. The teams include football, baseball, track and field, volleyball, water polo, swimming and diving, and basketball. The mascot is named Eddie the Eagle.
