Loras College was founded in 1839 as a liberal arts college by Rev. Mathias Loras. He established the college with the objective of educating young men for the priesthood, and to provide citizens of the area an opportunity to obtain higher education. In the past, the College was known as St. Raphael Seminary, Columbia College, Dubuque College, St. Joseph College, and Mt. St. Bernard. It eventually adopted its present name in 1939, when it celebrated its centenial. At present, the Loras College campus occupies an area of 65 acres over several hills in Dubuque.
Loras College was initially devoted to an undergraduate program and awarded Bachelor degrees in Arts and Science. However in 1963, after the Catholic University of America discontinued its branch program related to graduate study at the Loras campus, the College started its own Graduate Division and began offering master of arts degrees in several areas. The College has 21 men’s and women’s varsity teams. The athletic teams of Loras College are nickname the Duhawks.
