Overview

Marquette University, or MU, is a private, coeducational, Roman Catholic and Jesuit university located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1881.

Marquette began as a dream of the Most Rev. Martin J. Henni, the first Catholic bishop of Milwaukee, but it took nearly three decades, in 1881, before the school then known as Marquette College became a reality. It was a small liberal arts school for men named after Rev. Jacques Marquette.

MU is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

Marquette was ranked 84th among the top national universities America's Best Colleges of U.S. News & World Report, 2010 edition. Several graduate programs were named among the top 100, including nursing.

The Princeton Review named the College of Business Administration and Graduate School of Management an outstanding business school in its latest book, "The Best 301 Business Schools."

Marquette's campus is spread across an area of over 90 acres.

Greek life at Marquette involves more 8% of all students. There are more than 10 social sororities and over 9 social fraternities on campus, governed by Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, and National Pan-Hellenic Council.

Marquette's Golden Eagles compete in the 16-team Big East Conference, NCAA Athletics Division I. Varsity sports include basketball, cross country, soccer, tennis, and track.

Famous alumni include Gail Collins, author, reporter, formerly New York Times editorial page editor; Michael F. Flynn, science fiction author; Bill Johnson, saxophonist; actors Pat O'Brien and Amy Madigan; Edward Brennan, retired chair of Sears Roebuck; Kathleen Abernathy, former FCC Commissioner; Kathleen Hall Jameison, Dean Annenberg School for Communications, University of Pennsylvania; Robert J. Beck, scholar of international law, relations; George Allen, NFL head coach, Pro Football Hall of Famer; and Don Kojis, two-time NBA All-Star. Dwayne Wade, All-Star guard of Miami Heat, NBA Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist and Tom Snyder, former host of CBS Late Show attended but didn't graduate.
