Overview
Michigan State University is a coeducational public research university in East Lansing, Michigan.
Founded in 1855, MSU was the prototype for 69 land-grant schools established under the Morrill Act of 1862. It was also the first institution of higher learning in the United States to teach scientific agriculture.
Classes began in 1857 with three buildings, five faculty members and 63 male students. Today, MSU's campus sits on more 5,200 acres.
Originally, MSU was called the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. It underwent several name changes before acquiring its present name in 1964.

MSU has more than 170 active linkage agreements for research and outreach with international organizations in more than 50 countries. Michigan State University also has had more Rhodes scholars in the past 25 years than any other Big Ten school.
MSU is a member of the Association of American Universities, a group of 60 U.S. and two Canadian universities regarded as the top research-intensive institutions in North America. It was recently ranked 30th among the nation's public universities by U.S. News & World Report.
For four consecutive years, MSU was the leader in study abroad among U.S. public universities.
MSU is the only university in the country with three on-campus medical schools, graduating allopathic and osteopathic physicians and veterinarians.
The student population at MSU represents all 50 states in the United States and about 125 other countries. MSU has an active Greek system with more than 3,000 members--one of the largest in the nation.
MSU offers varsity squads in 12 intercollegiate sports for men and 13 for women in the Big Ten Conference.
Among MSU's notable alumni are Byron Halstead, botany educator; Barbara Ross-Lee, first African-American woman dean of a U.S. medical school; James H. Kimball, meteorologist who pioneered oceanic weather mapping, facilitating early transatlantic aviation; Rollo May, Father of American Existential Psychology; Julie Aigner-Clark, founder, The Baby Einstein Company; Beverly Jenkins, historical romances novelist; Noel Paul Stookey, the "Paul" of the '60s singing group Peter, Paul and Mary; and Tom Bissell, author and journalist. Actor James Caan and Ervin "Magic" Johnson, LA Lakers basketball player and entrepreneur, attended but did not graduate.

Athletics
School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Big Ten Conference for major sports.
